History of Edmundston Ladies Council #12

In the early 1970's, the CN employees' wives would meet at the CNR Club on Court Street in Edmundston almost every Friday night.

It was in 1975 that they had their first real meeting with Adele Verrette (late Laurier Verrette), founding President, Adeline Verret (Gerry) was acting as Secretary, Eileen Picard (late George), Ethel Hoyt (late Murray), Helen MacFarlane (late Roddy) Claudette Verret (late Adrien), Lucille Fournier (Armand), Jeane Harquail (Arthur), Olive Desjardins (Real-Badou), Corinne Cyr (Lucien), Lucette Gallant (late Marcel), Therese Gallant (late Raymond) and a few others were some of the first members.

Since then, Council #12 has been the only CNPA Ladies' Council in Canada. There was an attendance of about 10 members at each bilingual meeting.

Some of the President that followed in Adele Verrette's footsteps were: Eileen Picard, Jeane Harquail, and the late Magella Picard. Adeline Verret has taken the presidency of this council in November of 1994. From about 20 members in 1975, they now have a 100% membership for 2003 with 102 members on PRD and a total contributing membership of 217 members.

Meetings are held at La Villa des Jardins every 2 months on the 3rd Monday. They also have monthly breakfast meetings in St. Anne, St. Leonard, Grand Falls, Drummond and New Denmark. Members attend from as far as Centreville.

They usually have invited professional guests who give information on such matters as nutrition, Alzheimer's, physical fitness, pensions, CPP and OASP, telephone scams, insurance, etc. The regular attendance at each meeting is an average of 30 members. They attend because they say that the meetings are interesting for the mind as well as the body.

The Ladies Council also has 15 telephone Captains who each have a list of about 10 members. They keep their contacts informed of any new developments regarding CNPA in the event that they won't be able to attend the meetings. Also to inform them of members who have passed away so they can attend funeral parlour/funeral for prayers. The sick members are visited regularly by Alma LeClair and Adeline Verret. More than 200 visits a year are made to either the hospital, nursing home or at their residence.
