Per VIA: Modification of the rules related to the accumulation of VIA Préférence points for reservations made with a VIA Rail pass by a CN or CP retiree/their spouse or dependents VIA Rail has standardized the rules related to points accumulation and tier qualification for all bookings made with a VIA Rail pass, so that they are aligned with the program’s general terms and conditions. This change was made as of April 3, 2025, and points accumulation and tier qualification rules for CN and CP retirees rail passes are as follows: Members who travel with a pass will earn points only when they pay a surcharge. The amount of the surcharge will be used to calculate the number of points to be credited. The amount paid for a surcharge during a given qualification period will be used to determine the member’s tier level. Impacted passes (Pass codes - Passholders): GB - CN active employees, their spouse and dependents GT - Grand Trunk employee, their spouse and dependents HB - CN retirees at the time of issuance, their spouse and dependents MB - CP retiree, spouse & dependents

Saskatchewan Council (D2) The Saskatchewan Council (D2) is based in Saskatoon and represents over 900 members living across the province of Saskatchewan. Our council is combined with that of Manitoba Division #1 and together we are known as the Prairie Region within the National Council. Manitoba has two national directors and Saskatchewan has one. These directors are there to serve the membership as liaisons between pensioners/surviving spouses and Canadian National Railways. If you are thinking about joining the Saskatchewan Council, please select council D2, on your membership application. The executive of the Saskatchewan council are your volunteers to assist you in any way that we can on items associated with your CN pension, benefits or CNPA health care with Blue Cross. Council Newsletter The Saskatchewan Council issues a newsletter 5 times per year. It provides information to our members from the National Council, from the Health Care Committee concerning the Blue Cross Health Care Plan, and from the CN Pension meetings held four times per year. It also includes information from our local meetings and from pensioners/surviving spouses in our local communities that forward information to either our meetings or directly to the Newsletter Editor. The newsletter also keeps you up to date on the latest on savings on travel, reductions on automobile purchases, home/car/travel insurance, hotel stays, scholarships for children/grandchildren, etc. This newsletter goes to those who have signed up to the Saskatchewan council only and so, it is not available online. The newsletter can be received electronically by email and this is our preferred method as it saves the council mailing costs. As well, by choosing this option, you will receive the newsletter approximately five days earlier than via Canada Post and it will be in colour rather than a black and white mailed copy. To receive it electronically, you still must be a member in good standing. We currently have close to 500 pensioners/spouses that receive it by email. Our History The Saskatchewan CNR Pensioners Assoc. was founded in February 1985. In the words of Stan Plue, one of our founders... "When I retired in 1982, and after a year of talking with people I worked with, and associated with when working, I thought it would be a good idea if we had an organization where we could meet and visit. It became that 23 Pensioners formed the C.N.R. Pensioners Assoc. in Saskatoon in 1985. We had a lot of help from trades people on the C.N. but the person that made this all happen was Mr. Russ Pelesh who was the District Superintendent at the time, headquartered in Saskatoon". Our Founders Roy Armstrong Shirley Corbett Harold Harnett Bruce Kimpton Stan Plue Ken Uhrich Frank Atchison Ernie Dale Ted Holmes Alfonse Martin Stan Read Sid Wilkins Art Back Bob England Al Hockey Bob Mclay Reg Taylor George Wood Toby Cole Paul Fontaine Morley Hyland Lawrence Pattison Pete Telfer The Saskatchewan association then became affiliated with the National Council of Pensioners and now represent all the CN Pensioners in Saskatchewan under the name of "CNR Pensioners Assoc., Saskatchewan Division, Inc.", incorporated as a non-profit corporation in 2003.
- Rail Safety Week | cnpensioners.org
Rail Safety Week 2024 Help CN to Spread the Rail Safety Message Held annually in September, Rail Safety Week is a great opportunity to inform the public about the importance of rail safety and the risks of trespassing and not obeying signs and signals at grade crossings. This year, Rail Safety Week 2024 will be held in Canada, the United States and Mexico from September 23-29. Operation Lifesaver, and its partners, created Rail Safety Week in 2003 to raise public awareness of the potential dangers at railway crossings and from trespassing on railway property. Since then the momentum has grown and together with our partners at Operation Lifesaver, CN will join forces again this year to promote public rail safety in communities throughout our network across North America. Join our CN Rail Safety Week team! Rail Safety Week is just around the corner and we need your help to ensure it's a success! Why get involved? Your experience, insight, and commitment can truly make a difference in promoting safety around railway tracks and crossings. By volunteering with us, you'll play a crucial role in educating others about safe practices and raising awareness about the importance of rail safety. Here's how you can contribute: Volunteer: Join our team of dedicated volunteers during Rail Safety Week. Whether it's distributing educational materials, assisting at events, or engaging with the community, your participation will be invaluable. For a list of specific events being organized in your area, please email rsw@cn.ca Make a presentation: Your firsthand experiences can resonate deeply with others. Let's work together to ensure that everyone understands the importance of rail safety. For more information, please email rsw@cn.ca . - IPO Option to Age 65 | cnpensioners.org
Increased Pension to Age 65 Option If you retire before age 65, you may elect the increased pension to age 65 option (IPO). Under this option, you receive more from the CN Pension Plan before age 65 and less after age 65. If you choose this option, your increased CN pension will be reduced for life once you reach age 65. Your decision to elect or decline this option is personal and irrevocable. The following example illustrates how the IPO affects an employee retiring early at age 56 and 6 months on December 31, 2004: With IPO : Monthly Pension before Age 65 CN Basic Pension $2500 IPO Allowance $ 183 Total Monthly Pension $2683 Monthly Pension after Age 65* CN Basic Pension $2283 Without IPO : Monthly Pension before Age 65 CN Basic Pension $2500 IPO Allowance $ 0 Total Monthly Pension $2500 Monthly Pension after Age 65 CN Basic Pension $2500 * In this example, at age 65, the total CN monthly pension of $2,683 being paid is reduced for life by the fixed amount of $400 a month ($2,683 - $400 = $2,283). The increased pension to age 65 option is calculated so that the value of both options is, on average, the same. The amount of the IPO allowance reflects the age of the member at retirement, the applicable reduction of $400 at age 65, interest rates and whether the member retired early or on disability pension. Because survivor benefits are calculated using the CN basic pension amount, your decision to elect or decline the IPO will have no bearing on pension benefits which may become payable to your survivors.

Ready To Sign Up? Are you a CN pensioner or surviving spouse and still not a member of the CNPA? Have you wondered why you should consider becoming a member all for only $1 a month? Hopefully our Programs & Benefits Page will have assisted you in making the decision to join us. The annual membership fee is $12.00 and the period is calendar year (January - December). Membership fee can be paid via payroll deduction (recommended method of payment). We arrange to have $1.00 per month deducted from your monthly pension cheque. This method is administratively beneficial to the association as it helps keep our administrative costs down. It saves the cost of postage to and from members each year, banking fees, transportation costs, etc. It is also beneficial to the pensioner as it continues without interruption until otherwise advised by the pensioner. You never have to wonder if your dues have been paid ever again. NOTE: As part of the Partnership agreement between CN and CNPA, effective January 1, 2020, CN will pay for the first twenty-four months of CNPA membership for all new retirees who enroll in the CNPA upon their retirement.
